BLEACHING POWDER: (CaOCl2)

Bleaching powder also known as chlorinated lime is a yellowish-white powder easily soluble in water. It is hygroscopic if kept under 40C. It is mainly used as a bleaching agent and as a disinfectant. The major use of bleaching powder is in the paper industry, textile industry, and oil industry. It is also used in all chemical industries where bleaching is required.

Raw Material:
1. LIMESTONE
2. CHLORINE GAS

Manufacturing Process:

In the manufacture of bleaching powder, the burned lime is treated with water and converted to calcium hydroxide. Then it is feed to the chlorine reactor. Chlorine gas is passed and calcium hydroxide is converted to Bleaching powder. The reactor is heated and cooled to room temperature.


CAO + H2O --> CA(OH)2
Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 --> CaOCl2 + H2O

1. As a disinfectant & germicide especially in the sterilization of drinking water
2. Mainly as a bleaching agent for cotton, linen, and wood pulp
3. As an oxidizing agent in many industries
4. For the manufacture of chloroform
