Sodium Hypochlorite is a chemical compound with the formula NaClO. Sodium Hypochlorite solution, commonly known as bleach or clorox, is frequently used as a disinfectant or a bleaching agent. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a compound that can be effectively used for water purification. It is used on a large scale for surface purification, bleaching, odor removal and water disinfection.
Stage I:
Manufacture of sodium Hydroxide: Sodium hydroxide is manufactured by membrane electrolysis of pure brine to sodium hydroxide, chlorine and hydrogen by passing D.C. current to the membrane electrolyser.
Stage II:
Chlorine gas is passes through the absorbing tower while sodium hydroxide solution is sprayed from the top of the tower. Sodium hydroxide react with chlorine and sodium hypo chlorite is produced in the concentrated form 12-15%.
1. Sodium Hypochlorite is used on a large scale in Textile and Paper Industries. In the textile industry sodium hypochlorite is used to bleach textile. It is sometimes added to industrial waste water. This is done to reduce odors.
2. It is also used in agriculture, chemical, paint, lime, food, glass, pharmaceutical, synthetics and waste disposal industries.
